Orchids in La Fortuna (Costa Rica)

Orchids in Costa Rica

Ver página en: Español

For me, orchids are one of the most fascinating flower species around and Costa Rica happens to have an astounding variety species (over 1300). Granted, not as many as Ecuador; but still. The exotic looks of many orchid species have enchanted flower lovers from all over the world, and some flowers have been sold for exorbitant prices.

Also, did you know that vanilla comes from a specie of orchid native to Mexico? It was cultivated by indigenous people, before the conquistadors introduced it to Europe. Today, cultivating vanilla is a very labour-intensive process; which makes it the second most expensive spice, after saffron. Fascinating, isn’t it?
